Amazon Listing Variation Use & Abuse

Amazon listings should be easy to read and describe exactly what is being shown in the pictures. But sometimes people can mess up on their listing and describe things that are either not visible, or it doesn’t make sense.

Listing variations is defined as the product options shown within the same listing according to Web Retailer.  Amazon defines it as:

“Variations (also known as parent-child relationships) are sets of products that are related to one another. Good variation relationship listings allow buyers to compare and choose products based on different attributes such as size, color, or other characteristics from the available options on a single product detail page.”

Listing variations allow you to gain better conversion rates by allowing you to sell one item, but in different colors, sizes etc. One problem with listing variations that people run into are listing the variations in the wrong spot, making it harder for customers to order. When customers run into a problem like that, this hurts the customer along with the seller and could possibly get their account closed. How? The customer will become frustrated and leave your listing or even report it because they found something they really want but there is no way for them to pick the right thing if it is listed wrong.

This also leaves a seller with a bad reputation. Having multiple people complain can cause you to take penalties against your account which can lead to your account becoming suspended. Becoming suspended is something every seller dreads.

Variation Relationships

According to Amazon variation relationships are sets of products that are related to one another. Amazon will remove product listings that do not correctly use established variation themes, so it is important to fill them out with patience and care.

A few things to keep in mind when listing your variations:

  • If the product is completely different, make a separate listing
  • Don’t mix up the colors vs. sizes
  • Double check listings before submitting to prevent listing removal
